美国南加州当地时间5日晚间8时19分许再发生规模6.9强震，震央位于里奇克莱斯特（Ridgecrest）东北边10公里处，震源深度0.9公里，未来可能还会再有多起余震。稍早美国地质调查局（USGS）把规模7.1下修到6.9，不过该网站疑似故障，随后又把规模调整为7.1。

当地警方已在推特发出警示讯息，除非需要医疗协助、发生火灾、天然气外泄等需要紧急服务时，民众请勿随意拨打911。
根据多家外媒报导，洛杉矶市中心感受到至少30秒晃动，此外，内华达州拉斯维加斯（Las Vegas）也有感到摇晃。USGS指出，甚至墨西哥也有感。
南加州当地时间4日上午10时33分发生规模6.4大地震，震央位在洛杉矶北方150英里（约240公里）的莫哈维沙漠（Mojave Desert），震源深度仅8.7公里，当时这起地震为南加州20年以来规模最大的。科学家5日表示，南加州4日发生地震后，已经再有1700多次余震。
