一颗小行星碎片在7日傍晚5点38分划过美国佛蒙特州（Vermont）上空，并在穿越大气层时因为撞击压力，化为火球、产生音爆。超过100名来自美国东北部和加拿大的目击者指出，他们当时感觉整座房子都在震动,还听见「嘎嘎嘎」的巨响。

综合《每日邮报》和NBC报导，美国太空总署（NASA）表示，这颗重量约4.5公斤，直径15公分的火球一开始在曼斯菲尔德山国家森林（Mount Mansfield State Forest）上空约83.7公里处现身，随后以每小时6万7600公里的移动速度朝东北方向飞去，最后消失于海滩山（Beach Hill）53公里处上空。

NASA也指出，火球可能是某颗小行星的碎片在进入大气层后，因为撞击压力而产生的；小行星在碎裂过程中会产生压力波，进而导致建筑物震动，并产生民众所听到的声响。据悉，火球在碎裂过程中释放出了相当于440磅TNT炸药的能量。
