文／夏礼章▲The Platters 合唱团 (图／翻摄自网路)The Platters 合唱团的最后一位创始团员低音歌手Herb Reed 六月4日于波士顿当地医院不幸去世（83岁），Herb出生于堪萨斯市，1953年与另三名好友前往洛杉矶，先以以黑胶唱片的俗称当作团名组成了the Platters合唱团，接着开始在地方电视台节目献唱，经过一连串团员的异动，他们于1955年终于在Mercury唱片公司推出了曾在Federal 唱片公司唱过的"Only You (And You Alone)"这首成名曲，这首最高获得过第5名的歌也是他们22首排行榜前40名畅销曲当中的第一首，他们其它受欢迎的歌还有"My Prayer" ( 1956年五周冠军曲), "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" ( 1959年单周冠军曲), "The Great Pretender ( 1956年单周冠军曲), "Twilight Time" ( 1958年单周冠军曲), "(You've Got The) Magic Touch" ( 1956年第4名) 与"Harbor Lights" ( 1960获得第8名)。1961年the Platters合唱团的主唱Tony Williams离团而去，改由Sonny Turner担任主唱，但这个异动使the Platters不再有排行榜前10名的畅销曲，因为团员变动频繁，后来出现很多冒牌的"Platters"，所幸Herb Reed始终合法拥有正牌团名使用权。The Platters 合唱团是1950年代的冠军演唱团体，在历年畅销歌星与合唱团排行榜获得第51名，并于1990年被推荐进入摇滚乐名人堂，1998年进入演唱团体名人堂，2009年则被选入畅销曲杂志名人堂。The Platters为数甚多的美声演唱歌曲是很多老歌迷们听西洋歌曲的入门之选，由带他们到Mercury唱片的经纪人Buck Ram与Andre Rand所写的"Only You (And You Alone)"这首歌更带给歌迷们永恒的回忆。
