网球天王费德勒（Roger Federer）于上周四（15日）宣布引退，为长达24年的职业生涯画下了句点。回顾过去，他曾经赢得20个大满贯冠军，与对手纳达尔和乔克维奇称为「网坛三巨头」，如今这名年届41岁的传奇即将引退，令许多球迷感到不舍。今天就让我们从他的引退宣言来看学TOEIC测验的常考英文吧！
acknowledge认可、承认
费德勒在Twitter上发声明宣布退休，其中一段这样感谢他的团队：
I really want to thank and acknowledge my amazing team..., who have given me the best advice and have always been there for me. （我真的想要感谢和认可我优秀的团队…，你们给予我最棒的建议，且一直陪伴着我。）
acknowledge解释为「认可」，单字来自于knowledge「知识」，字首「ac-」有「朝向某方向」的意思，代表come to understand or recognize的意思，因此就是「认可、承认」的意思。
acknowledge后面加上动名词，表达承认做了某件事情，动词后面加上动名词表达已经做了某件事情，其他常见动词还有forget。forget后方加上to V则表达忘记做某件事情。
She acknowledged having been at fault. （她承认自己有过错。）
She forgot turning on the TV. （她忘记已经开了电视。）
She forgot to turn on the TV. （她忘记要开电视了。）
acknowledge加上that名词子句的用法，则代表承认某件事情。
She acknowledged that she had been at fault. （她承认自己有过错。）
All I want is some acknowledgment that his behavior is unreasonable.（我只要你们承认他的行为是无理取闹就好。）
名词变化acknowledgment则是去掉e并在字尾加上「-ment」。
We sent her a copy of the book in acknowledgment of her part in its creation. （我们寄给她一本书以感谢她为这本书的问世所做的贡献。）
片语in acknowledge of 代表「认可某件事情」，除了动词加上受词的用法，也可以采用名词变化。若用动词改写则是We sent her a copy of the book to acknowledge her part in its creation.
loyal忠诚的、royal皇室的
I want to thank my loyal sponsors, who are really like partners to me; and the hard-working teams and tournaments on the ATP Tour. （我想要感谢我忠诚的赞助商，你们真的就像是我的伙伴，以及ATP巡回赛事中勤奋不懈的团队。）
loyal sponsors解释为「忠诚的赞助商」。loyal (a)是「忠诚的」，注意不要和royal「皇室的」搞混。名词变化是在字尾加上「-ty」成为loyalty，是常见的名词字尾变化，其他相同用法还有certain、certainty「确认、绝对」；cruel、cruelty「残酷」、honest、honesty「诚实」。
Jack has been a loyal worker in this company for almost 50 years. （Jack是这间公司忠诚的员工，已经工作了快50年了。）
若要表达对某人忠诚，则可使用介系词to加上忠诚的对象。
She’s very loyal to her friends. （她对朋友非常忠诚。）
sponsor (n)是「赞助商」的意思，当动词时则解释为「赞助」，属于动词名词同型的单字。
The team is sponsored by JVC, so the players wear the letters JVC on their shirts. （该队是由JVC公司赞助的，所以队员们的衬衫上都有JVC的字母。）
I have over 50 sponsors for next week’s race. （我下周的比赛有超过50个赞助商。）
另外一个名词变化sponsorship则是较抽象的概念，指的是「赞助的行为或状态」，例如the brands sponsorship of sports events（体育赛事的品牌赞助）。另外也有「赞助费」的意思，in加上sponsorship则表达「从…得到赞助费」。
The orchestra receives £2 million a year in sponsorship from companies. （该乐团每年从这些公司获得200万英镑的赞助费。）
