网路世代熟悉的Windows浏览器Internet Explorer（IE），因为近年使用者大幅减少，加上微软推出新浏览器Edge，在上周三停止技术支援，也代表IE正式退场、走入历史。本次就让我们来从国外相关报导学习如何用英文表达「退场」吧！

退休、辞职、下台怎么说？

retire (v)代表「退休」，相关名词有retirement「退休」、retiree (n)「退休人士」，通常在届龄退休时使用。

Mr. Schmidt’s retirement party will be held at the seafood restaurant next Friday.（Schmidt先生的退休宴将于下周五在海鲜餐厅举行。）

另外，同样是离开工作岗位，「辞职」是resign (v)，名词为resignation。片语resign to则代表「把…托付给、委托」的意思。

After Mr. Sutton’s resignation, Ms. Lambert took over his responsibilities.（Sutton先生辞职后，由Lambert小姐接管他的职责。）

She resigned her children to the care of her brother.（她把孩子交给她哥哥照管。）

而同样是描述辞职的单字还有step down (v)「退场、退位、下台」，通常是表达政治人物（或高阶主管）辞职、离开现有职务。

The CEO of QuaKing Inc. stepped down amid a scandal involving insider trading and money laundering. （QuaKing公司的CEO因身陷内线交易和洗钱的丑闻而下台。）

与「退场」相似的字词还有bow out (v)，bow当动词为「鞠躬」，注意发音为[au]，而名词bow有「领结、弓」等意思，发音为[o]。而bow out根据字面可以解释为「下台一鞠躬」，也就是「结束」的意思。

To most people’s surprise, McLaughlin, the defending champion, bowed out in the first round of the tournament. （出乎大多数人意料的是，卫冕冠军McLaughlin在首轮比赛就被淘汰出局。）

phase out (v)也可以用来描述「渐渐退场」，而phase (n)单做一个单字时则是stage「阶段」的意思。

The company will gradually phase out the use of fluorescent lightbulbs.（公司将逐渐淘汰萤光灯泡的使用。）

要描述产品被「移除」，或公司、军队「撤离、撤出」则可用withdraw (v)这个字。

Due to financial concerns, Parkland city decided to withdraw its bid to host the international tennis tournament.（由于财务上的问题，Parkland市决定撤回申办国际网球锦标赛。）

IE退场令人错愕

使用量急遽下降是IE退场原因之一，尽管微软有预告退役时间，但仍有不少企业对IE的退场感到错愕，甚至仍然需要使用Edge浏览器中的IE模式，例如日本退休金服务机构（Japan Pension Service）。

plummet (v)「剧跌」经常在股市相关新闻中，以及多益测验（https://bit.ly/3HzWrLk）财务金融情境出现，通常代表「下跌快速且剧烈」的意思。

Several stocks plummeted on Friday after the news of the war broke out.（在战争爆发的新闻出来后，许多股票在周五应声大跌。）

caught by surprise指的是「令人错愕」，通常表示之前没预期到，突然感到讶异。同样要表示「感到错愕」也可以用thrown for a loop来形容， loop在此解释为「环圈」，throw则有「陷入」的意思，因此让人陷入环圈、摸不着头绪就是「令人很意外、很震惊」的意思。

I was really thrown for a loop when Amanda told me I was fired. （当Amanda告诉我说我被开除时，我真的感到相当错愕。）

pension (n) 是多益测验的重要字汇，指的是「退休金、抚恤金」。

As a result of pension system reform, workers now might need to work until age 68.（年金改革的结果是劳工可能须工作到68岁。）

IE从1995年推出服务至今，伴随不少人度过了求学时期做报告、找资料的日子，是许多人青春时的共同回忆，而今光荣退役，结束其27年生涯，成为时代的眼泪。
