They invoked help in the desperate situation. 他们在走投无路的情况下恳求援助。

Be desperate for…: 极需，极度渴望

He's desperate for a glass of water. 他极想喝一杯水。

We're desperate for money. 我们极需钱。

Desperately: adv. 拼命地,  绝望地,  极严重地,  孤注一掷地

They desperately wanted a child. 他们非常想要有一个孩子。

He searched desperately for something to say. 他搜肠刮肚，想找点话说。

Make the most of …: 充分把握……，充分利用……最大限度地利用
