每年《韦氏字典》、《柯林斯词典》与《牛津英语词典》三大权威辞典会公布「年度代表关键字」以回顾当年全球关注的议题。像是2020年《柯林斯词典》选出的年度代表字就是lockdown（封城），其他热门单字有社交距离（social distancing）、自我隔离（self-isolate）、无薪假（furlough），这些单字都成为全球抗疫经验的同义词。今年《韦氏字典》和《牛津英语词典》都选出「疫苗」作为2021年的代表字。
Earlier this month, lexicographers at the Oxford English Dictionary chose “vax” as their word of the year, due to an explosion in the use of related terms such as “vaxxed” and “anti-vaxxer”. The word “vax” was first recorded in English in 1799, with “vaccinate” and “vaccination” first appearing a year later. 多种疫苗相关单字
vax／vaxxed／anti-vaxxer「疫苗／打疫苗／反疫苗者」。vax可当作动词或名词，作名词时就是vaccine「疫苗」／vaccination「打疫苗（一事）」的缩写；作为动词时则是vaccinate「施打疫苗」的意思。
The children were vaccinated against the major childhood diseases.（孩子们已打了疫苗，能够抵抗大部分儿童常见疾病。）
因为人们是被打疫苗，因此必须使用被动形式，因此vaxxed要使用过去分词的语态。另外anti-vaxxer要注意常见字首「anti」代表「否定」的意思，因此指的是「反疫苗者」。
explosion (n.)「爆炸、大量」来自于动词explode，字尾「-sion」作名词变化，另外延伸出「激增」的意思。字首「ex-」有「往外」的意思，因此表示爆炸是由内向外炸开。
A bomb exploded at one of the capital's busiest railway stations this morning.（今早一枚炸弹在首都最繁忙的一个火车站爆炸。）
The population has exploded in the last ten years.（在过去十年中，人口激增。）

increase、soar 飙升
obvious／stark (adj.)「明显的、显著的」。两个单字用以表示某个明显的现象，obvious加上「-ly」就是副词变化obviously，常用的句型有It's obvious that +子句，而that句型后要接一个明显的事实，且必须是要完整的子句。
There is no obvious solution.（还没有明显的解决办法。）
It's obvious that she doesn’t like him. （很明显地她并不喜欢他。）
stark当形容词除了代表「明显的、赤裸的」，也可以延伸为「残酷的、严苛的」意思。stark同时也可作为副词，属于形容词／副词同型的单字，意思为「完全地、极端地」。
The stark reality is that we are operating at a huge loss. （严酷的事实是我们的经营亏损非常严重。）
The children were splashing in the river, stark naked.（孩子们一丝不挂地在河里玩水。）
stark naked等同于completely naked（完全裸露）的意思。值得注意的是，同义词替换的阅读写作技巧也是多益测验的必备重要技能之一。
pre-pandemic (adj.)「疫情前的」。pandemic获选为2020年《韦氏字典》的年度单字，形容一场「大规模蔓延的疾病」；而字首「pre-」有「在…之前」的意思，因此pre-pandemic很明显就是「疫情前的」。
与字首「pre-」常见的单字有pre-order （预定）、preview（预习）、predict（预测，dict有「say（说）」的意思，因此预先说就是预测）等单字；其相对的意思为字首「post-」，代表「在…之后」，如post-war（战后的）、postscript（后记，script有「write（写）」的意思，事后写下来就是后记）等，因此或许我们可以期待未来的年度关键字包含了post-pandemic，代表我们已经渡过了疫情的肆虐了。
In some parts of the world, malaria is still pandemic.（在世界上的某些地方，疟疾仍然是流行病。）
increase／soar (v.)「上升、增加」。increase当动词时将重音放在第二音节[ɪnˋkris]，作名词时则把重音节往前移，变成[ˋɪnkris]，此为英文发音常见作法，借此区分沟通时对方是用作何种词性，并依此来判断语意。字首「in-」代表「往上」，因此意思为「往下」的字首「de-」就是反义词，decrease意思是「减少、下降」。
soar相对于increase更为动感，有「骤升」的意思，这个单字在准备考试时很重要，因为学术考试中写作关于数据分析的文章，就经常需要使用类似的动词以表达数据的上升下降。
House prices soared a further 20 percent.（房价又窜升了20％。）
