【英语多益通】剑桥王子诞生 查尔斯声明当爷爷

在全世界的高度瞩目与祝福之下，凯特王妃终于在7月23日生下一名男婴。女王伊莉莎白二世是第一个得到消息的人；整个英国上下都欢天喜地迎接这个王室宝宝（Royal Baby）的降临。威廉王子的父亲查尔斯王子与其妻卡蜜拉也升格为阿公阿嬷。威廉王子的生母──那红颜薄命的黛安娜，若是天堂有知，也应该为这动人的一刻，感到喜悦。
白金汉宫依惯例在前院竖起牌子，召告英国上下关于王室宝宝诞生的消息。英国王位第一顺位继承人—查尔斯王子，与其妻卡蜜拉立刻发表声明（statement）。该声明只有三句话，他说了什么呢？
第一句话他说：「我与妻子卡蜜拉对于我们第一个孙子的到来感都到欣喜万分。」
Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild.
此句堪称简易。对你而言，唯一字汇可能是overjoyed。但是你如果知道joy是「高兴、欢愉」，而字首「over-」有「超过、过度」之意的话，你应该不难猜出overjoy是比高兴更超出的「狂喜、欣喜万分」。“arrival”是arrive的名词，词类变化要在平常阅读的时候即稍加注意。
第二句话他说：「对威廉与凯特而言，这是一个极为特别的时刻，而我们都为他们生下的男婴而非常高兴。」
It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy.
句中的incredibly是林书豪爆红时代的Linsanity与Lincredible两字之一incredible的副词，它原本是「难以置信地」，但衍申为「极为、非常、很」。「thrill」是动词的「兴奋、激动」。值得一提的是，thrill也可以指激动到「紧张、毛骨悚然」，而常看到的thriller是指「恐怕电影（小说）」或是刺激到毛孔收缩的「惊险小说、电影」。
第三句话他说：「就像最近几个月无数和蔼可亲的人所告诉我的，升格为祖父母对任何人而言，都是独特的；所以我非常高兴且骄傲的第一次做爷爷，而我们热切期望在最快的未来看到宝宝。」
Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future.
这虽是一个长句，但它只不过是由三个连接词as、so、and连接四个短句的长句：
句1：Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life.句2：Countless kind people have told me in recent months.句3：I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time.句4：We are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future.
句中的「unique」（独特的）、「enormously」（巨大地、非常地）、与「look forward to + Ving」（期望、期盼）都是多益测验的重要字。
多益测验的Part 6最喜欢用短篇的声明（statement）、公告（notice）、电子邮件（email）、或是公司内部公文（memo）等等，作为出题的材料。在此，我们以查尔斯王子的声明为题材，试一试你的多益身手：
"Both my wife ____(1.)____ I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild. It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of ____(2.)____ baby boy.

解析：第一题的正确答案是(B)。破题的关键是both这个字，因为「both A and B」表示A、B「两者都」如何如何，所以(B)为正解。如果是A、B两者其中之一，亦即非A即B的情况下，要用「either A or B」。答案(A)的but所连接的字义要呈现相反，例如This car is old but reliable.（这辆车很旧，但是性能很可靠。）；答案(D)的if是连接词，要连接完整的句子。
第二题的正确答案是(C)。破题的关键是空格后的受词baby boy，因为有此受词，答案(A)与(C)都造成文意不符；在此应该是「他们的男婴」。答案(D)的theirs是代替前面所提的东西，它的用法特别之处是后面不能再接名词，例如「Mary是他们的朋友。」不能说成「Mary is a friend of their. (X)」，而要说成「Mary is a friend of theirs. (O)」，此外，「这书是他们的。」不能说成「This book is their. (X)」，而要说成「This book is theirs.」(O)，在此的theirs即等于their book。此为多益测验经常出现的「代名词」语法题。其他几个常出现的字为hers、yours、ours与mine。
第三题的正确答案是(D)。要选出一个副词来修饰动词「is looking forward to」（期望），所以选eagerly表示「热切地期望」。答案(A)是形容词、答案(B)是名词、答案(C)是形容词比较级，皆不符。
这名号称「剑桥王子」的男婴的诞生可是世界级的头条大新闻，因为这个衔着金汤匙出生的男婴有可能是未来「日不落国」──大英帝国的国君。相关的英文报导，我们怎能错过！
