【英语多益通】习访英高规格 多益热门字profile当红

中国国家主席习近平十月下旬抵达英国，进行「国是访问」（state visit），受到最「高规格」的接待。
习近平此次访英之所以会受到如此高规格的接待，究其原因，还是因为中国带去数百亿英镑的投资计划（investment），其中尤以核电厂（nuclear power plant）与高速铁路（high-speed rail project），最引人瞩目。务实的英国不强调中国大陆的人权问题与网路骇客问题，而把「中、英贸易摆在第一」，国际间称其为「put commerce with China first」。中、英双方都说：
The visit is designed to strengthen economic ties between Britain and China -- including Chinese investment in the UK and commercial ties between the two countries.（这次访问目的在强化中、英的经济双边关系，包括中国在英国的投资与两国的贸易合作。）

其中的investment与commercial可都是多益测验的重要常用字汇！
国际媒体大幅度报导，外界甚至称习近平的此次访英之行是「超级国是访问」。日不落的大英帝国如此高规格的接待习近平，英文的「高规格」要怎么说？
英国的「每日邮报」（Daily Mail）这么写：
Chinese president Xi Jinping has arrived in the UK as Britain rolled out the red carpet for the high-profile state visit.（中国领导人习近平抵达英国，英国铺红地毯高规格隆重接待国是访问。）
纽西兰媒体写道：
Chinese President Xi Jinping is in Britain on a high-profile state visit.（中国领导人习近平在英国进行高规格的国是访问。）
央视（CCTV）的国际频道用的标题是：
President Xi to arrive in UK for high-profile state visit（习领导人以高规格国是访问抵达英国）
应该不难发现，以上三句在「高规格」上，都用了「high profile」这样的字眼。「profile」一字原是指人的「侧面轮廓」或是「侧影」。既是侧影，有侧面描绘之意，所以profile又有「概述、简介」之意。profile又进一步衍申有「形象、印象」的意涵，在现今的新闻英语中，片语「high profile」是指「引人注目」，也就是我们本文讨论的「高规格」，而「keep a high profile」则有「保持高调」之意。同理可推，「保持低调」就是「keep a low profile」。你是个低调的人吗？请看例句：
The politician has a high profile in Tokyo.（这位政治人物在日本非常引人注目。）
This motor company now enjoys a high profile with its new sports car.（这家汽车公司目前以其新型跑车而备受瞩目）

我们既知profile有名词「概述、简介」的用法，那应该不难理解它也可以当动词的「概要介绍、概述、作简介」，例句：
This chief engineer’s career will be profiled in this month’s magazine.（这期杂志概述了这位总工程师的工作生涯。）

总是并肩作战的英、美两国，此次中国领导人习近平访英的高规格待遇，看在美国媒体的眼里，不免拿来与九月刚刚结束的习近平访问美国相比较。美国CNN有线电视新闻网认为此次习近平的访英，对照了习的九月访美是「轻描淡写的、低调的」：
…contrasts with Xi's more understated September visit to the United States，
此句中的「contrast…with」是指「使成对比、使成对照」，而understated则是「轻描淡写的、低调的」。面对中、美近来因为南海问题的逐渐对峙，美国也在问，此次习近平的高规格访英是「Does the UK have a new special relationship with China?」──英国与中国有新的「特殊关系」吗？
