【英语多益通】你今天YouBike了吗？

自2008年创立的YouBike，历经了5年的蛰伏期，到了2013年才有了一个「大爆发」，成为现在台北市大街小巷都看得见的黄色微笑自行车。当初工作人员曾因为YouBike的乏人问津与被民众批评为不实用的公共设施，一度考虑停办，但是他们认为城市自行车的作法在欧美非常成功，因此实在不愿放弃这么好的构想。
如今，台北YouBike逆转胜。世界知名的国际旅游杂志Global Traveler也以「Taipei On Two Wheels」（骑自行车的台北）称赞 YouBike的便利，它这么写道：
The YouBike rental station network enables commuters and tourists alike to hire a bike from one station and return it to any other. Rental payment can be made via the city's stored value EasyCard, major credit cards and mobile phones.
译：YouBike的租车网络使通勤族与观光客都可用甲地租车、乙地还车的方式租车。租车费用可以用本市可储值的悠游卡、主要的信用卡、或手机做支付。
YouBike使用说明第一步：成为会员
YouBike的迷人之处是你可以直接用台北公车、捷运皆通用的悠游卡（Easycard）来租车与还车。只要在YouBike的自动服务机（Kiosk）系统上，你就可以骑着「小小黄」的微笑YouBike进行城市漫游。成为会员（join）的方法是：
Join: For an Easycard holder, you can register as a YouBike member on a Kiosk, on the YouBike website, or at the Service Center. Single Rental for those who do not have an Easycard, you can use a cell phone or a chip credit card to rent a bike on a Kiosk at any station.
译：如果你要成为会员，你必须先持悠游卡到Kiosk自动服务机，或是上YouBike网站、或是到服务中心加入YouBike。至于没有悠游卡而想要单次租车的人，可以使用手机或是晶片信用卡到各场站的Kiosk自动服务机租车。
如果你还记得洋芋片是potato chips的话，可以知道chip是指「薄片」，应该不难理解chip credit card是「晶片信用卡」。
YouBike使用说明第二步：取车
每次要租YouBike自行车，要选车、取车（take），需要先做一个动作：
Take: Please first place your Easycard on the top of the dock, wait for the“Take”green light to flash and then pull the bike from behind to ride.
译：你必须在停车柱上方的面板上，先感应已注册的悠游卡，等待取车绿灯闪烁之后，再将YouBike自行车向后拉出使用。
英语字汇「place」在此可不是「地方」，而是当动词使用的「放、放置」。我们最常看到「dock」的用法是「码头、港区」，在此是停泊自行车的码头，所以YouBike的工作人员把它称为停靠自行车的「停车柱」。
YouBike使用说明第三步：还车
当你带着愉快的心情，骑着小小黄自行车穿梭在都市街头巷尾，结束前你必须要完成还车（return）的动作：
Return: Insert the bike lock plate into an unoccupied dock lock slot. Wait for the“Place Your Card”blue light to flash and then place the Easycard you used to rent this bike and confirm the fee deducted for this transaction and the remaining sum.Now the transaction is complete.
译：将车身卡榫插入空的停车柱。在刷卡蓝灯闪烁之后，感应本次借车时所使用的悠游卡，确认本次扣款与剩余金额，即完成交易。
以上这三段教你如何租、借、还YouBike的英语用字，是国际职场里常见的「使用说明」（instructions）；它是一种沟通工具，让使用者能正确使用，因此也常被多益测验的出题单位拿来做为测验题的材料。例如，《多益测验官方全真试题指南》就曾经出现过一题滤水器的使用说明，做为阅读测验Part 7的题目。
如果你看懂了以上YouBike的使用说明，那以下这3题多益测验的仿真题应该难不倒你：
1. What do the instructions explain?(A) How to use Kiosk and Easycard to rent a bicycle(B) How to choose a good bicycle(C) How to activate a credit card(D) How to repair a flash light
解析第1题的题意是「上述的说明在解释什么？」，正确答案是(A)。从以上加入会员、借车、还车的说明，可以明显看出是在指示如何租借YouBike。答案(B)如何挑选一辆好自行车、答案(C)如何替信用卡开卡、答案(D)如何修理手电筒，皆非正解。
本题有一个速解法，当看到instructions这个字时，因为它在职埸里有「使用说明（书）」之意，而答案(A)的「How to use....（如何使用⋯）」字眼可以迅速立判此为正确答案。顺道一提，instruction与construction（建筑）、obstruction（妨碍）、destruction（破坏）有相同的英语字根「struct」，它有build之意，不妨同时一学。
2. To register as a member, which place is NOT mentioned?(A) On a Kiosk(B) On the YouBike website(C) On a dock(D) At the Service Center
解析第2题的题意是「要注册成为会员，以下哪一个地点未提到？」，正确答案是(C)。本题是多益测验Part 7里的「挑错的」题型。从以上使用说明中的「you can register as a YouBike member on a Kiosk, on the YouBike website, or at the Service Center」得知有3处可以注册，而无法在停车柱（dock）上进行。
3. What is the purpose of the chip credit card?(A) To complete the transaction(B) To wait for the blue light to flash(C) To confirm the fee(D) To use it for single rental
解析第3题的题意是「晶片信用卡的用途是什么？」，正确答案是(D)，用于没有悠游卡而需要单次租用自行车的时候。答案(A)完成交易、答案(B)等待蓝灯闪烁、答案(C)确认租车费用，皆非正解。
YouBike的英语版使用说明只是instructions的一例，你的智慧型手机、印表机、录放影机、桌上型电脑等等，都有英语版的使用说明，要想在多益测验拿高分的人，不妨将这些没有人会注意的说明书拿来一读，你会发现它们饶富趣味，而且你的英语阅读能力会大大增加。

除了YouBike使用说明（instructions），以下各国城市自行车计划的流行词汇，也值得一学：
Bicycle Sharing System「自行车共用系统」。share有「分享、分摊、共用」的意思。当你的外国同事Mary跟你说：「I will be sharing this office, won't I?」，她是指「我将要和你共用这间办公室，是吗？」
Progressive Pricing Rates「累进费率」。「累进」是progressive，它与表示「进展、进步」的progress乃是系出同源。例：The board of directors requested the committee to supervise the progress in the technical area.（董事会要求委员会监督技术方面的工作进展。）
Commuter-friendly「方便通勤族的」。3C产品制造商常称某种设计是「user-friendly」， 即有利于使用者。YouBike给通勤族（commuter）提供便利性，故称commuter-friendly。commute（通勤）亦值得一记。例：About half of the employees at World Trade Center commute to work by bus.（世贸中心约有半数员工搭公车通勤。）
