【英语多益通】欧巴马访日争议发言学within的用法

欧巴马4月下旬访问亚洲，首站来到日本。他吃了米其林三星的生鱼片、面见了天皇。这位18年来首次正式访日的美国总统却也因为对于钓鱼台的发言，牵动了东亚的敏感神经，尤其中国。欧巴马是首次以美国总统的高度，对钓岛争议表示立场，他访日时表示：「钓鱼台『适用』美日安保条约」。英语上，他的话是这么呈现的：
The Senkaku Islands are administered by Japan and therefore fall within the scope of Article 5 of the U.S.-Japan Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security.（尖阁诸岛由日本管理，因此在美日安保条约第5条款的范围之内。）
欧巴马总统的「within the scope」，当即成为亚洲各国头条。「scope」在此是常用字义的「范围」，within the scope意指「在…范围之内」；「within」与「scope」都是好字，值得一学，尤其是介系词within。
作为介系词的within算是常用字，读作[wɪˋðɪn]，它可以指「时间」、「距离」与「空间」的「在…之内」。例如我们说「这个投资案能让公司在两年之内获利。」英语可用「The investment project would allow the company to make a profit within two years.」来呈现，within在此用于时间。又例如「他的新屋离购物中心只有走路的距离。」英语可用「His new house is within the walking distance of the shopping mall.」，句中的「within the walking distance」是指走路即可到达的范围之内，within在此用于距离。
例句：The noise is coming from within the building.（噪音是从大楼里面传出来的。）──within在此用于空间。
此次欧巴马总统针对钓鱼台的谈话，用了「within the scope of…」的说法，意指钓岛在「美日安保条约」的「范围之内」，而台湾的媒体则以「欧巴马访日指钓岛适用美日安保」作为翻译，亦算传神。如果借由这个机会使你学会了常用介系词within的用法，那以下出自《多益测验官方全真试题指南II》里的题目，肯定难不倒你：

欧巴马对钓岛的表态为何挑动了东亚的神经，大概以CNN这句报导最为清楚：「He told a Japanese newspaper that a group of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea claimed by both Tokyo and Beijing "fall within the scope" of a U.S.-Japanese security treaty, implying the United States could step in militarily in the event of a clash over the territory.」
此段为欧巴马告诉一家日本媒体说，在中国东海上的这个中日共同宣称拥有的无人群岛，适用美日安保条约；这隐含美国在领土冲突上可能军事插手干预。有些烟硝味。
