【英语多益通】会议的英文怎么说？4种用法一次解析

一年一度的G7 Summit（G7领袖高峰会）即将在法国的Biarritz举行，有鉴于全球各领域上的inequality（不平等）日渐扩大，今年的G7高峰会将以改善性别、环保、贸易和医疗的不平等为讨论主题。就让我们从G7高峰会这个主题中，学习一些多益（www.toeic.com.tw）关键字吧！
G20和G7的会议都是用summit一字，summit有最高点、高峰的意思，可以用来表示山的高峰或指某人成就的高峰，因此国家最高领袖或企业领导者的会议，都会用summit来表示。
其他表示会议的英文还有conference、meeting和convention。Conference通常指的是较大型且正式的会议或讨论，而meeting定义较广，可泛指一般的会议讨论，或两三人的聚会讨论。Convention则通常是大型而有推派代表（delegates）的大会，如民主党全国代表大会英文就是 Democratic National Convention。
Have you arranged the transportation and accommodations for the upcoming conference in Toronto?（你在多伦多会议的交通和住宿安排好了吗？）
Delegates from different regions of the country gathered at the party’s convention to nominate their presidential candidate. （各区来的代表将齐聚党代表大会来提名总统候选人。）
改善不平等inequality
今年G7 Summit的主要目标是改善各种不平等（inequality），这个字可以拆成字首、字根、字尾三个部分。「in- 」是否定的字首，「equi- 」／「equ- 」是「等量，相同」，「-ity」则是名词字尾。其他相关字为equal（相等的）、equality（平等）和equitable（公平的，公正的）。而从「equi- 」／「equ- 」这个字根，我们也可以学习其它常见字如 equivalent（相当的，相当于）。
The growing wealth inequality is a pressing issue in our society.（我们社会中日渐加剧的不平等是一个极为迫切的问题。）
强化英文怎么说？
此外，高峰会的另一个议题就是透过更公平的贸易、赋税和发展政策来强化全球化的社会层面。公平的贸易和赋税可以用fair and equitable trade and tax policies来表示，而「强化」就可用 strengthen 当动词，常见的动词字尾为「-en」。
● strength → strengthen （强化，加强）● short → shorten（缩短）● length → lengthen（加长）
Several countries discussed how to strengthen their cooperation on the prevention and control of certain communicable diseases. （一些国家讨论如何强化他们在传染疾病的预防和控制上的合作。）
和strengthen同义并常见的词有动词fortify和reinforce。
To reinforce the relationship with their VIP clients, the firm usually invites these VIPs to the concerts they sponsor. （为了加强他们跟VIP客户的关系，公司通常会邀请这些客户参加他们所赞助的演唱会。）
和strengthen相反的字是weaken（弱化，削弱），本次高峰会也将讨论如何对抗恐怖主义，并采取适当的政策来防止恐怖主义削弱社会的根基。
We need to prevent terrorism from weakening the foundations of our societies.（我们需要防止恐怖主义削弱我们社会的根基。）
strengthen和weaken也可用来形容台风或飓风的强度的状态。
After making a landfall on Saturday night, Hurricane Barry weakened to a tropical storm. （Barry飓风在星期六晚上登陆后减弱为热带风暴。）
除了社会经济面的机会不平等外，环保仍是各国重视的议题之一。今年的会议也将讨论透过climate finance（气候融资）等政策来降低全球暖化速度、保护环境与海洋及preserve biodiversity（保留物种的多元性）。其中finance当名词有「财务」或「资金提供」之意，形容词为 financial，当动词意思则为「提供资金或借款」。
His swim in the Arctic Ocean was financed by several countries.（他泳渡北极海是由一些国家资助的。）
The electronics manufacturer went out of business because of financial problems.（因财务问题，这间电子产品制造商结束营业。）
开发、利用 tap into
峰会最后一个讨论的议题是开发利用数位科技和人工智能所创造的机会（tap into the opportunities created by digital technology and artificial intelligence）。
tap into something 意思为「开发，利用（资源）」，而untapped可当形容词，表示「未开发的」。
We might need to tap into East European market to expand our market share. （我们可能需要开发东欧市场以扩展我们的市占率。）
A talent show will be held to discover untapped talents in the region.（我们将举行一个才艺秀来发掘当地未开发的人才。）
