【英语多益通】害群之马英文不用horse，从颜色学英文

前阵子威力彩累积史上最高头奖31.2亿元，上周又开出6.1亿一人独得的大奖，让许多人跃跃欲试自己的手气，看看是否能够得到这个彩虹尽头的一桶金（a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow）。其实英文中有许多运用到颜色的俗语，何不趁全民疯彩「金」的现在来学一学？
金色 gold
「金」是古今中外众人所追求的物质，而金色也常是人们所喜好的颜色，因此金色在中英文里都常被用来形容美好或重要的事物，如黄金时间，黄金周等。
我们常听到用「黄金准则」golden rule来表达基本或重要的原则，golden opportunity则是指千载难逢的好机会。
The golden rule in sales is to know your customers and provide them with good customer services.（销售的黄金准则即是了解客户并提供好的客户服务。）
在职场或商业新闻里也会听到golden handcuffs、golden parachute，handcuffs是手铐，parachute则是降落伞。手铐虽然是不好的东西，然而却是黄金做的，因此这个词常用来形容被繁重的工作给束缚住，然而这个工作同时给的待遇条件等却相当优渥，所以常常让人觉得被扣住而难以离开。
而golden parachute指的是公司高层如CEO离职或被解雇时拿到的优渥离职金，所以字面上「黄金降落伞」也可翻成「高额离职金（severance）」。
The CEO of the company walked away with a $15 million golden parachute, the highest payout in the company’s history.（公司的CEO拿了一千五百万的黄金离职金，创了公司史上最高的金额。）
银色 silver
价值仅次于金的银，也有些常用的片语。如我们说某人是「含着金汤匙出生的」，英文要用silver spoon。此外，也常听到用来安慰人或要人乐观以对的silver lining。
silver lining是从这句谚语Every cloud has a silver lining出来的，乌云在太阳渐渐浮现时就会有一个银色的边（lining），因此用来表示在糟糕的情况中，我们也看到隐于黑暗中的希望。著名的电影《派特的幸福剧本》英文片名即为《Silver Linings Playbook》。
The silver lining to the stay-at-home order during COVID-19 outbreak is that I finally cleaned up the clutters in the house.（新冠肺炎的封城令对我带来的一个正面影响，就是我终于清理房子内堆积的杂物。）
灰色 gray
近似于银色的有灰色和白色，英文里的白发可用gray hair，而gray也可以用作动词表示「变老」。
The increasing graying of the population has caused some concerns。（人口高龄化造成一些隐忧。）
还有gray area「灰色地带」，意指一个非黑非白的模糊区域。
The gray areas in the regulations need to be further clarified before they are finalized. （在发表规定前，必须将上面的灰色地带加以澄清。）
black and white就是「非黑即白」，通常用来形容过分简单化事情的二分法，但是in black and white或put (something) down in black and white要解释为「白纸黑字写清楚」。
The issue is not black and white as most people think.（事情不是如一般人想的般非黑即白。）
To avoid potential disputes, it’s better to put down the agreement in black and white.（为避免有可能的争议，最好白纸黑字写下来。）
白色 white
和白色相关的词有white lie善意的谎言、raise a white flag高举白旗，投降，但white elephant无法用直译为「白色大象」，这里指的是大而无用、或是昂贵而不实用的东西。
The pedestrian walkway has been a white elephant since few people use it.（这个行人道对大多数人真是一个不实用的建设。）
黑色 black
和白色相反的黑色在许多文化里都比较有负面的意思，如black sheep害群之马，blacklist黑名单，blackmail (v,n)当动词解释为发黑函；威胁，black market黑市等。
blackout (n)有三个常见的意思，一是晕倒，暂时失去意识（如同眼前发黑一般）；二是停电，断电；最后一个是封锁，譬如新闻的封锁a news blackout，或者限制。
We had a blackout for several hours because the severe storm knocked down power lines.（因暴风雨吹毁电线，我们断电好几个小时。）
There are no blackout days for using these reward points.（这些奖励点数使用上没有限制。）
然而，黑色也不全然是负面的，in the black表示有获利，就是指销售数字是「正的」。
Our sales have been in the black after the government’s decision on reopening businesses.（在政府决定解封后，我们一直都有获利。）
此外黑色也有个有趣的俗语the pot calling the kettle black，字面上意思是「锅子说水壶黑」，跟中文里「五十步笑百步」类似。
介绍了个别颜色的词后，也来看看颜色colors相关的片语，with flying colors，意思是「出色地；成功地」。
Our restaurant passed the city’s inspection with flying colors. （我们的餐厅成功地通过市府的检查。）
