【英语多益通】迎接2021！从媒体预测学英文

刚结束的2020年可说是继1945年的第二次世界大战之后，全体人类面对最大挑战的一年。一场疫情改变了世界，全球化的世界关系也因而发生了本质的变化，正好趁2021年刚开始，回顾2020年发生的事情，展望人类未来。各家媒体都有一些预测，今天让我们来用英文检视这些对未来的预估吧！

提及回顾2020年，《时代杂志（Time）》上一篇文章作者这么描述着：

Gaslighting has been a major feature of American civic life since 2016, but in 2020 it reached new heights of outlandishness, making many of us feel as if we’d been pushed to the other side of the looking glass.（「煤气灯操纵」是自从2016年开始美国人民生活的一大特点，但是在2020年它达到了奇异新高峰，使的许多人感觉我们似乎被迫推向镜面的另一头。）

● gaslight 煤气灯操纵

gaslight的中文翻译是煤气灯操纵或煤气灯效应，属于一种情感操纵手法。根据纽约时代中文网上一篇《谎言、心理虐待与「煤气灯操纵」》的内容表示，「煤气灯操纵的目的是使受害者质疑自己的记忆、感知和理智。这种手段利用否定、误导和谎言，试图破坏受害者情绪的稳定，使受害者最终怀疑自己相信的现实是否属实。」基本上，这就是一种典型的心理操控手段，美国总统川普是将此手段发挥到极致的政治人物，也让这个动词频繁出现在英文世界里。

至于用法的来源，文章中说明其来源于1944年由英格丽‧褒曼（Ingrid Bergman）主演的电影《Gas Light》。褒曼饰演的妻子亲眼看到灯光闪烁、听到楼上传来的可疑脚步声，但她的丈夫却说服她没有发生这样的事，使她一步步受到孤立，慢慢开始相信自己精神失常。例句中的「Gaslighting」则是加上「-ing」变成动名词的用法。

● outlandishness 奇异

这个单字是outlandish加上「-ness」变成名词，outlandish是形容词，意思就是奇异的、异国风格的、偏僻的，比较常见的同义词有像是bizarre、odd、peculiar、quaint、queer、quirky、strange、wacky、weird等，如一部美国Starz有线电视台所承制改编自小说的电视剧《Outlander》，中文翻成《古战场传奇》或《异乡人》，就有承接异国的、奇异的意思，字尾「-er」在这里有人的意思。

对于未来的预测之中，在网站nature一篇文章《疫情在2021如何发展与延续》（How the pandemic might play out in 2021 and beyond）中作者对于未来的预测提到：

Early evidence suggests that personal behavioral changes, such as hand-washing and wearing masks, are persisting beyond strict lockdown, helping to stem the tide of infections.（早期的证据显示，如洗手和戴口罩这些个人行为的改变正在延续，超越了严格的封城程度，帮助遏制感染潮。）

● persist 坚持、持续

persist的用法是persist in后面加上受词，「坚持做一样事情」就可以用这个片语。persist用在这里是为强调行为的持续性，insist on则是强硬的坚持，多用在意见和看法。因此前者非常强调仅管有很多困难，还是坚持下去的概念。名词的变化是persistence，而persistent则是形容词变化。

句中在后面加上beyond，要表达的是这样的坚持超越了封城的限制，因此就算没有了封城，人类的行为也从此改变，会开始戴口罩和洗手，目的就是为了要抑制病毒的扩散。

● stem 遏制

stem在这里是动词用法，作名词的话意思是植物的茎，因此英文有个片语stem from，是「起源于」的意思，同义词有originate from、come from、derive from，植物要有茎才能往上长，因此就有起源的意思。可是用在例句却是另一个完全不同的意思──堵住、阻挡，也就是stop。
