【英语多益通】看《漫漫回家路》要有will power才能忍住泪水

改编自印度小说家Saroo Brierley回忆录《A Long Way Home》，电影《漫漫回家路》（Lion）诉说5岁的Saroo历经25年岁月，跨过不同的国家、海洋最后终于回到家乡印度与亲生母亲重逢。
电影不仅呈现出小男孩面对未知城市和危险处境的恐惧，更展现男孩迫切想找到生母的渴望，因此获得今年奥斯卡6项大奖提名（最佳影片、最佳男女配角等），以及入围金球奖最佳男、女配角的肯定。
让我们看这部赚人热泪的金奖电影，同时学习多益测验里的精选单字吧：
1. 经历go through
作者在回忆录里，这样描述他曲折的人生故事：
I went through a whirlwind, being on that train, nearly being kidnapped and drowning and being locked up in a juvenile prison, and then coming to Australia and seeing the tranquility.（我在火车上经历了如狂风般的混乱困惑，后来经历了几乎被绑架，溺水，被关在少年监狱，最后来到澳洲，面对平静。）
go through这里可解释为「经历」，也可做「仔细看过／检查」。
The family went through political persecution and hardships and finally arrived in the U.S.（那个家庭经历政治迫害和艰困得生活，终于抵达美国。）
It took me the whole night to go through a 300-page report.（我花了整个晚上看一个300页的报告。）
2. 决心与意志力Determination and Will Power Saroo在电视访谈中提到，寻找亲人的过程有如海底捞针，没有决心和毅力是做不到的：
Everything we have in the world is at the tap of a button, but you gotta have the will and the determination to [get] it.（要做世上任何事就像按个按钮般，但是你需要的是意志力和决心（才能做到／得到）。）
determination是名词的决心，动词为determine，常见的用法是be determined to V 「下定决心做___」。
Lisa is determined to become an entrepreneur before 35.（Lisa下定决心在35岁以前成为一个企业家。）
俗话说「有志者事竟成」英文即是「Where there’s a will, there’s a way.」will是名词指「意志」，而意志力也可用will power来表现。
3. 耗费多年光阴Take vs. Spend从Saroo和朋友的谈话中，我们能感受到寻亲之路有多么艰难：
朋友: How long were you on the train?Saroo: A couple of days.朋友: A couple of days? …….It would take a lifetime to search all the stations in India.（你在火车上多久？）（两天。）（两天？……搜寻印度所有的车站可能要花上一辈子的时间）
take常用在时间花费，基本上主词要有虚主词「it」。另一个也可当「花费」用的是spend，但要特别注意，spend要用「人」做主词，并且spend之后常加名词或动名词，如：I spent three hours doing my homework last night.（昨晚我花了3个小时做我的作业。）
It took me three hours to complete the project.（完成这项专案花了我3个小时。）
有时要表达花费很多时间也可用个比较夸张的说法如下：My internet connection is so slow and it takes forever to download a file.
take也可用在表达「需要____」，我们常说的「一个巴掌拍不响」英文上就可用「It takes two to tango.」字面上解释就是「需要两个人才能跳探戈」。

4. 收养之爱Adoptive
此外，故事中令人感动的是Saroo的养母（adoptive mother）并不是因无法生育而领养小孩，而是想给这孩子一个家庭和爱。
读者是否注意到养父母的英文为adoptive father/mother？而什么时候才用adopted呢？一个简单的区分法就是被领养的用adopted，「-ed」的字尾在英文上有被动的意思。因此，养母、养父用 adoptive mother、adoptive father，养子则可以用adopted son。
值得注意的是，跟adopt拼字上非常类似的字还有adapt和adept，很容易造成混淆，虽然只差一个字母，但意思可大不同喔！
adopt (v)除了上述的「领养」外，也有「采用」的意思。The committee finally agreed to adopt his proposal.（委员会终于同意采用他的建议。）
adapt (v)是「适应，调整」，常用adapt to _________来表达。Some companies are quick to adapt to new changes.（有些公司能很快地适应新的改变。）
adept (adj)则是「熟练，擅长」，通常用 be adept at ________。Mary is adept at talking to people and making them feel comfortable around her.（Mary善于跟人沟通谈话，让他们觉得在她身旁很自在。）
多益补充单字juvenile (adj) 青少年的、(n) 青少年，少年法庭可用juvenile courttranquil (adj) 宁静的，名词为tranquilitytap (v) 按，press的意思kidnap (v) 绑架drown (v) 溺水haystack (n) 稻草堆。obsess (v) 对（事物的）着迷和困扰，常用被动形态be obsessed with/about (something)表现obsession (n) 着迷。replicate (v) 复制，也可做「繁衍、生育」解，同reproduce。Replica(n) 复制品。do some good做对的事、做好事do someone good则表示「对某人有好处」。

解析：1. 正确答案(A)复制品。本题为单字题，需看语意选出最符合的单字。选项(B)修改、(C)报复，复仇、(D)退款皆不符，故选(A)。题意为「Bob在博物馆的礼品店买了一个翠玉白菜的复制品。」
2. 正确答案(C)。本题为文法题，Determine是动词，意思是「决定」，本句的主要动词是are working，两个动词之间要用不定词to 连接，因此(C)为正确答案。题意为「航空公司的官员正和航空专家合作来调查造成200人死亡的坠机原因」。
