【英语多益通】看懂这几句英文 你也能当祖克伯小孩的保母

脸书创办人马克.祖克伯第二个女儿上个月刚出生，最近在Indeed.com的网站上出现一则有趣的征人启事，在矽谷的华人社区引起讨论。其内容为应征一名保母，除了列出一般的应征资格外，其中一点要求保母需会说中文，引起大家怀疑是否为祖克伯释出的征人讯息。不过不管真相如何，想要应征这个年薪高福利好的保母，得先看懂这则英文的征人启事！
看懂工作天数和时数The nanny will work 5 days, have 5 days off, work 2 days, and have 2 days off on a rotating schedule. The working hours are 8AM-8/9PM.
这里谈到工作几天休几天的英文，其实没有想像中困难，我们可以在work five days后面加上straight，指的就是连续不停歇，算是个口语常见的说法。例句：I haven’t slept for two days straight.（我已经连续两天没阖眼睡觉了。）
而要表达休假可以用get ~ day(s) off，英文中off应用相当广泛，这边加在几日后面表示休息，这是英文常见表达语，也正是多益常用的语句，大家趁机熟记吧！例句：Can I take a day off tomorrow?（我明天可以休一天假吗？）
看懂薪水和福利Highly competitive salary( $110,$130,000 DOE plus full benefits, medical, dental, vision, etc
首先我们看到在薪水后面写了个DOE，指的是Depends on Experience，也就是实际的薪水多寡要取决于你的工作经验；另一个也常见的DOQ则是Depends on Qualifications，取决于资格。
这个保母的工作年薪介于美金10万到13万间，而且享有医疗、牙科和视力等全额健康保险。讲到年薪，我们一定要来学一个多益常见的单字annual。
Annual是yearly的意思，来自于拉丁文annus，代表年的意思，后面加「-al」的变化变成了形容词，因此annual salary指的就是年薪。
Salary在英文的概念通常是一段时间的薪水，通常用月薪monthly salary，或是年薪yearly salary来表达，跟pay稍有差异，后者通常会用在hourly pay时薪的概念上面。前者较为责任制，后者为时间制。
看到这里，你是否也跃跃欲试想应征传说中的保母呢？虽然每日要工作超过12小时，早上8点上班后得工作至晚上8或9点才能下班，但也可以得到很丰厚的补偿。
这边我们再来学一个片语「sb is well compensated for sth」。Compensate（补偿）是多益常见动词，名词变化为compensation，通常表达你有损失，而对方需补偿你的损失的意思。在此则是表达你付出的劳力会得到相当的报酬，也就是补偿你失去的时间或是劳力的回报之意。
片语前面加上well表达「相当地」，也就是报酬不会太低，如well-liked（很受人喜爱的）、well-written（写得很好的）、well-respected（很受人尊敬的）等。从这几个例子可看出，后面要接的是个过去分词变化的形容词！
而compensate后的介系词用for是表达报酬的「目的」为何，像是这个保母的工作得到相当好的报酬可以用compensate for her work。例句：I took her swimming to compensate for having missed out on the cinema.（我因为错过了电影，于是带她去游泳作为补偿。）
