【英语多益通】投票前先来学「公投」英文怎么说？

台湾本周六（11/24）即将举办大选，相信许多人都已经准备好回家投票。选举是目前世界主流政体中推举主导人的制度，而选举英文需要学会的字可是一点也不少，很多更是多益测验常考单字！
政党的英文是由party而来的，这边的party指的不是派对，而是political party。选举之后，胜利的一方自然成为执政党（ruling party），ruling来自于rule，在这边不做「规则」之意，而是作为动词「统治」的意思。而在野党则是因为要提出反对意见与监督，所以就以反对党（opposition party）称之。
The area is currently ruled by armed militias.（该国目前被武装民兵所统治。）
The team can still rule the tournament even without its injured players.（即便少了受伤的球员，该队依然可以制霸巡回赛。）
候选人提名、登记
许多候选人都是由政党指派或协调出来的，但在新闻中通常不使用指派（assign）这个字，而会使用提名（nominate）。nominate这个字来自于nom-（nym-）的字根，意思是名字，常见相关的字有anonymous（匿名的）与synonym（同义字）。提名的过程为nomination，受提名人则以nominee称之。如果是因为某个特殊的原因或是奖项而受到提名，则使用表示原因的介词for来表达。
The college is going to invite a Nobel Prize nominee to give a speech next week.（该大学下周将邀请诺贝尔奖受提名人进行演讲。）
The director is nominated for national award for her contributions on preserving cultural heritage. （该导演因在保存文化遗产上的贡献而受国家奖项提名。）
除了提名之外，候选人还要进行登记的动作，而登记的英文和注册一样都是用register。相关的登记限制例如年龄等，其英语说法为registration requirement，而登记时需要先缴交的保证金费用则是以deposit来表示。
Nominees are required to pay a deposit of USD 3,000 to register for the election.（受提名人必须支付三千美金的保证金来注册选举。）
在成功完成登记的动作后，候选人就改以candidate称之。特别需要注意的是，除了选举之外，职场上的求职人除了有（job）applicant的说法外，也常以candidate表示。
The interview this morning is going to be extremely competitive with 13 candidates for 1 position. （今早的面试因有13个面试者抢一个位置，将会极度竞争。）
选举与公投
台湾在11月24日除了九合一选举外，还会有台湾史上最多票数的公投提案。选举的英文来自elect延伸而出的名词型态election，elect来自拉丁文，e-（ex）表示向外，-lect（legere）表示挑出来，有着把人挑出来外面之意，形成选举的意思。而公投则是用专门字referendum（复数为referenda）来表示。
Taiwan is going to hold referenda on marriage equality reforms in November 2018. （台湾将于2018年11月举办婚姻平权改革的公投。）
少数与多数
选举的胜负关键是多数票与少数票，多数的说法由major（主要）而来，majority就是多数的那方。相对而言，minor与minority就表示少数。
The result shows that the majority of Taiwanese citizens will vote in favor of death penalty.（结果显示台湾公民多数投票时皆会支持死刑。）
而除了多数决（majority vote）这种最常见的投票方式外，也有小群众高权力的群体，如陪审团投票时常使用的无异议决（unanimity），其形容词为unanimous。
For many countries in the world, jurisdictions require a guilty verdict by a jury to be unanimous. （在世界上的许多国家，司法单位都要求陪审团的有罪判定须是无异议决。）
选票英文
选举时要投给某个人的动词是vote，而选票也就沿用同一个单字，赢得选票的说法就是win votes。
The candidate has won enough votes for her to celebrate victory before the final count is announced. （在最后的票数计算公布前，该候选人已经赢得足够的票数庆祝胜利。）
除了vote之外，一般的选票也可以用ballot这个字来形容。
The assistant on my right will collect judges’ ballots five minutes after the last speaker finishes the speech. （在我右手边的助手将会在最后一位讲者完成演讲后五分钟收集评审的选票。）
选举调查
在投票和结果公布前，民众最常聊的大概就是各种民调结果了。一般意见调查最常见的英文用法是poll；如果是科学上的调查，更常用的则是survey；针对大范围人口的普查，最专业而正确的用法为census。
The poll shows that it’s going to be a neck-and-neck race for those two candidates in this district.（该调查显示对于此区的两个候选人将是一场不相上下的竞赛。）
The new survey indicates that consumers are swarming toward online streaming media for entertainment on demand.（新研究调查显示消费者正涌向线上流媒体以取得随时可得的娱乐。）
The census data will be used to conduct analyses and set future directions.（普查资料将被用于进行分析并设定未来方向。）
多益模拟试题：

解析：
1. 正解(C)。题意为「该提名人将需要于本周完成登记手续以作为正式候选人。」空格后方为助动词will，前方应为可进行动作的主词。选项(A)为动词、(B)为提名的名词，(D)为受提名的现在分词，故可做为答案者仅有选项(C)。
2. 正解(D)。题意为「若任何事物有所毁损，租屋保证金将被屋主没收。」题中有forfeit（没收）与rent（租金）、以及owner（屋主），加上前句有vandalize（毁损）四个关键字，显见会被没收的是(D) deposit（保证金）。(A) receipt（收据）、(B)advertisement（广告）、(C) tissue（抽取式面纸）。
