【英语多益通】大甲妈遶境「延期」英文怎么说？

台湾三月疯妈祖，又到了一年一度的妈祖遶境（pilgrimage）庆典，然而今年因为新冠病毒疫情，大甲镇澜宫已宣布将延期长达九天的妈祖出巡活动，就连520总统就职活动也暂停筹办。同时间，全球各种大型盛事或活动也面临同样的问题，义大利威尼斯的面具嘉年华因疫情升高而提前结束，米兰的时装秀（Fashion show）也有部分采用直播方式进行。
这次疫情导致全球许多展览不是延期就是取消，而展览改期也造成ripple effects（涟漪效应），影响了饭店和旅游业等，就让我们趁机来复习有关延期与取消等多益关键字。
节庆不只有Festival
首先来看看各种活动的英文讲法。妈祖遶境是一种宗教活动，比较精准的用词是pilgrimage「朝圣之路；参拜之行」。当然可以用较广义的festival「节日，节庆」来表示，相关的字有形容词festive、名词festivity「庆祝活动」，例如元宵节Lantern Festival，德国的啤酒节Oktoberfest等。除了festival外，也有嘉年华carnival，如巴西的Brazilian Carnival，威尼斯的Mask Festival/Carnival。
Chinese New Year is usually celebrated with a number of festivities such as lion dance.（中国新年通常有很多庆祝活动，比如舞龙舞狮。）
很多嘉年华都会有欢庆的游行活动，「游行」的英文是parade (n)，这和抗议游行的「游行；示威」demonstration (n)用字不同，demonstration除了示威游行之外，另一个常用的意思是「展示」，常听到的「demo」就是demonstration的缩词，动词为demonstrate。
Taiwan’s LGBT pride parade is held annually in October.（台湾同志游行通常在每年10月举行。）
Protestors gathered to join the demonstrations against police brutality. （抗议者聚集对抗警察暴力。）
The instructor of this workshop will demonstrate how to use electrical tools properly and safely.（工作坊的讲师将会示范如何正确并安全使用工具。）
展览可以用show
这次新冠肺炎除了大型活动外，许多展览和会议也受到相当程度的影响。「展览」英文可以用fair、exhibition、exposition、show来表示。exhibition、exposition (expo)、show比较偏向有商品或物件的展示，或者有business to business (B2B)、business to consumer (B2C)的买卖，所以博物馆的展览、画展和商品展就常用exhibition、trade show。
而fair通常指人们聚集的地方，除了产品的买卖和展示外，还有比较娱乐、有趣的活动或表演，常用fair的情况如书展book fair、就业博览会job fair、美国的夏日市集country fair等。
There’s a Picasso Exhibition at the art gallery this month. （这个月在美术馆有毕卡索的画展。）
Join our annual job fair on campus next Friday.（请参加我们下周五的年度校园就业博览会。）
Remember to visit our competitors’ booths while you’re at the trade show.（当你到了展场时，记得去看一下我们竞争者的摊位。）
另外exhibit这个字，可当作名词「展示品；展览（exhibition）」，也可以用做动词「展示（display）」。
Young children usually exhibit shyness when they are around strangers.（小孩子通常在陌生人前会显得害羞。）
The museum has new exhibits from Egypt. （博物馆有从埃及来的新展品。）
取消还能用postpone
展览取消可以用最简单的cancel (v)或者call off，当然也可用比较活泼的方式如pull the plug。pull the plug字面上的意思是「拔掉插头」，所以可以想见就是「停止」。而「延期」则可用postpone、delay、put off等词表达，譬如英文谚语「Never put off until tomorrow what you can do today.（今日事今日毕）」。注意，cancel、call off、pull the plug如果后面还要加动词的话，需要用动名词Ving的形式。
We had to postpone traveling to Korea due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus.（由于新冠肺炎爆发，我们必须取消韩国旅游。）
He decided to call off the press conference at the last minute.（他在最后一刻决定取消新闻记者会。）
聚集记得用assemble
不管是节庆的庆祝活动或展览，这些都是人群聚集的地方，「聚集」在英文上可用gather (v)和assemble (v)。assemble尤其是多益重要单字，有两个常用的意思，一是「聚集，集合」，名词就是assembly，另一个是「组装」（put together）。
The movie star came out and waved at the fans assembled outside the hotel.（那位电影明星出来对聚在饭店外的影迷挥手致意。）
To assemble this table, follow the steps illustrated in the manual. （根据手册图解的步骤来组装这个桌子。）
convene也有集合的意思，但是比较指集合召开会议，所以常看到它的名词形式convention「会议；集会」，例如会议中心也常用convention center。
The manager convened a meeting of his sale team to discuss the upcoming product launch.（经理召集他的业务团队讨论产品发布事宜。）

2. 正解为(B)。本题需要一个复合名词 因此空格部分需用名词assembly，所以正确答案是(B)，assembly line是「包装线；组装线」。本题题意是「当他们关闭一个工厂，许多组装线员工也被解雇了。」
