2016美国总统大选由两位争议性、话题性十足的总统候选人希拉蕊和川普角逐，究竟奖落谁家，我们马上就能见分晓。
传统上，选举结果出炉时，败选的一方会接受败选（concede）并恭贺（congratulate）对手，以及对选民和支持者发表败选感言（concession speech），如2008年麦肯（McCain）的谈话：
“… A little while ago, I had the honor of calling Senator Barack Obama to congratulate him on being elected the next president of the country that we both love… Senator Obama has achieved a great thing for himself and for his country. I applaud him for it …” （不久前，我很荣幸地能致电Obama参议员并恭贺他当选成为我们所热爱的国家的下一位总统。Obama参议员完成他自己本身和这个国家的一件伟大的成就。我对他这个成就极度赞许。）
在日常生活中可能会有需要发表感言的时候，我们可以从上述谈话学一些适用于国际职场和多益测验的好字。
1. concede当动词用，可解释为「承认、接受」或「退让、让步」，这里做「承认并接受」解释。（名词为concession）
2. congratulate 人 on 事 注意介词on后需接名词或动名词，也可用名词形式来表达祝贺：congratulations to 人 on 事。口语上常用缩写congrats来表达「恭喜！」。
3. achieve表「达成、完成」常用于achieve your goals。履历表内有一栏「成就」，此时就可用名词「achievement」来表达。
4. applaud动词，可做「赞许、称许」或「鼓掌」解释。
同样在职场上，我们也可能碰到需要写信或致电恭贺他人的情境，例如升迁、找到新工作、店面开幕、赢得比赛等等。基本上，祝贺信有两个主要的部分：恭贺对方的成就和称许对方的优点。
举例：Congratulations to you on your promotion to general manager. I know that you’ve worked hard for years and you are definitely the right person for the job. I’m certain that your company will benefit from your expertise as well as your experience. I wish you all the best in this new post.（恭喜你高升到总经理一职！我知道你长久以来都很努力，你绝对是这个工作最适当的人选，我相信你的公司能从你的专业和经验获益。祝你在新职万事顺利。）
* post (n.) 职位* benefit 解释为「获益」，benefit from「从 _____ 获益」。
1. on behalf of 代表（represent）On behalf of ___(company)__, I offer my congratulations on your recent appointment. （我代表某公司恭贺你出任新的职位）。
appoint意思为「任命、委任」，通常用被动形式be appointed ____（被任命职位）表现，其名词为「appointment」。
2. heartfelt形容词，表示「诚挚的」。例句Please accept our heartfelt congratulations on your promotion.（请接受我们对你高升最诚挚的祝贺。）
promote有两个重要的意思，一是推广、促销，另一是升职。例句The company uses social media to promote their products.（这个公司用社群网站来推广他们的产品。）Jane was promoted to sales manager three years ago.（三年前，Jane被提拔为业务经理。）
promote的反义字为demote（降职），而名词promotion同样是升职的意思，也可用advancement。例句：We were delighted to learn of your promotion / advancement.（我们很高兴得知你的高升。）
相反的，若是当事人被解雇或是没有拿到工作或某职位，我们则需要写信鼓励他，此时可写一封简单的letter of sympathy（安慰信）。
范例：I’m sorry to hear that you lost your position during this terrible recession. Things like this always happen and they are beyond our control. I’m sure that this is just a temporary setback. I believe that with your expertise and skills, you will be back in the saddle soon. Please let me know if you need any help.（很抱歉听到你在经济不景气中失去了工作，像这样的事总是会发生，而且这不是我们所能控制的。我相信这个挫败事短暂的，以你的专业和技能，你应该会很快的找到工作。如果有任何需要帮忙，请让我知道。）
* 多益常考单字1. recession 做「萧条、衰退」解释，动词为recede，同义字有downturn等。
2. temporary意思为「短暂、临时的」；反义字为permanent「永久的」。
3. setback名词，解释为「挫折」。

解析：正确答案(C)，本题句中缺乏动词，因此须选出最适合的动词时态。题意为「根据最新发布的新闻，李先生已经被任命为驻日大使。」李先生是被委任，所以需以被动式的形态出现。因此(C)为正解。
2. Philip was ______________ for his decision on reducing the cost and improving productivity.(A)appraised(B)appeased(C)appointed(D)applauded
解析：正确答案(D)，本题为单字题，这几个单字的拼法容易造成混淆。选项(A)为「评估、估价」，选项(B)解释为「安抚」，选项(C)表示「任命」，因此只有(D)「赞许、称赞」符合句意。题意为「Philip降低成本和提高生产力的决定让人称许。」
