【英语多益通】想向诺曼第登陆老兵「致敬」英文怎么说？

今年6月6日是诺曼第登陆75周年（75th anniversary of D-Day），为了纪念这场二战的重要战役，美国600家戏院将重新放映经典二战电影「抢救雷恩大兵」。这部由史蒂芬·史匹柏在1998年执导的电影不但荣获当年奥斯卡最佳导演奖在内的5项大奖，全球总票房更高达4.8亿美元。就让我们从诺曼第登陆75周年，学会一些多益关键字吧！

史无前例的 unprecedented诺曼第战役为何如此重要，除了它是将欧洲从纳粹手中解放的重要战役之外，也是迄今人类近代史上规模最大的一次海上登陆作战。

Soldiers have crossed the seas in ships for several thousand years to assail their enemies on foreign shores, but in terms of scale and intention, the amphibious assault on the Normandy coast was unprecedented.（数千年来军人皆是乘船跨海攻击在异国海岸上的敌人，不过论规模或意图，诺曼第沿岸的两栖袭击可说是史无前例。）

unprecedented其实是由许多字根组成的，拆解开来后就会比较容易理解。我们先从其中的precede看起，动词precede意思是「在…之前、领先」，往后加上「-ent」就变成名词precedent「先例」，再往后加上字尾「-ed」则成了形容词precedented「在先的、有前例的」。若是在前头加上字首「un」，便是相反词「史无前例」的意思。不过precedented这个形容词现在几乎不再使用了，现在「有前例的」形容词用字是与名词相同的precedent。

precedent作为名词较形容词型态常见且实用，像是我们提到「开先例」，就可以用set a precedent或create a precedent来描述，而「破例」的英文就是break (with) precedent。

I never allow my son to use his smartphone during mealtimes because I don't want to set a bad precedent.（我通常不准儿子在吃饭时间使用手机，因为我不想开这个不良先例。）

The golf club has broken with precedent and elected a female president.（高尔夫球社打破前例推选出一位女社长。）

庆祝、纪念 commemorate/memorialize诺曼第战役在一天内便造成数万人死亡，然而它也是促使第二次世界大战结束，让欧洲重获自由的战役，因此每周年皆会举办活动欢庆这场值得纪念的事件。

The 75th anniversary of the Normandy landings will be commemorated with military parades, firework displays, airdrops, giant picnics, concerts, and military camp re-enactments.（为了庆祝诺曼地登陆75周年，将会有军队游行、烟火表演、伞兵空投、大型野餐、音乐会以及军营重现等活动。）

commemorate的字首「com」有「一起、共同」之意，而中间的「memor」跟memory源自同一个字根「记得的、留心的」，因此commemorate为纪念、庆祝的意思。

常见的同义字是celebrate，不过这两个「庆祝」的用法会有情境上的差异，通常commemorate是用在替较大的事件或伟大的人物庆祝，并且是透过大型活动、仪式等方式来纪念这些人物或事件。而celebrate除了大事的庆祝，一般生活中的小事物皆可使用且不限庆祝方式。通常commemorate可以用celebrate来代换，但像替朋友庆生这种情境便只能使用celebrate而不能使用commemorate。

Helen’s birthday is coming up and we’re planning to celebrate her birthday in the best steakhouse downtown.（海伦的生日快到了，我们正计划要在市中心最棒的牛排馆替她庆祝。）

另一个很接近commemorate用法的同义字为memorialize，此字较着重于纪念重大事件与人物。将此字拆开后，前面的memorial是形容词「纪念的」，例如Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall（国父纪念馆）和228 Peace Memorial Day（二二八和平纪念日）都是用memorial这个字，memorial后面接上「-ize」字尾便成了纪念的动词。

致敬 pay tribute to每年6月6日分别在法国、英国、美国及加拿大等地皆会举行诺曼第登陆的周年纪念活动，不过最盛大的庆典及展览绝对是在法国诺曼第。

Each year, thousands of people descend on Normandy in France to pay tribute to those who fought to liberate Europe and remember those who never returned.（每年都会有好几千人涌入法国诺曼第，向曾对抗纳粹解放欧洲的军人及死者们致敬。）

tribute是敬意的名词，同时也有赞颂及贡品的意思，原拉丁文字根「tribuere」有allot「分配」及pay「付款」等含意。此外，pay tribute to只能用在人身上，pay homage to someone为其同义字，常用在成就非凡贡献良多的人或是已逝世的伟人身上。

Tonight we gather here to pay tribute to one of the greatest actors of all time.（今晚我们凝聚在此向有史以来最厉害的演员致敬。）

在多益测验中有几个包含tribute的常考单字，如contribute和distribute，contribute的「con」为「共同」，加上tribute便延伸出贡献的意思。

而distribute的「dis」有individually「个人地」之意，再搭配上tribute字根分配的意思，便成了分配、发放的动词，例如在路上发送传单（distribute flyers）和发送小手册（distribute pamphlets）。
