【英语多益通】地震是earthquake 那余震英文怎么说？

美国阿拉斯加的安克拉治发生规模7.0大地震，造成当地的基础建设和道路严重损坏。地震新闻经常出现在国际新闻中，本文将介绍一些地震相关的英文字，让读者学会看懂地震新闻，还可以掌握多益关键字！
地震袭击
首先，地震袭击最常用到的动词为hit或strike，和台风侵袭的用法相同。也可用比较生动的动词rattle或rock来表示，这两个字都有「摇晃」的意思，其中rattle有连续快速而短的震动之意，响尾蛇在英文上即称为 rattlesnake。
A 7.2 earthquake struck central Chile in 2012. （2012年智利中部发生7.2的地震。）
A 6.5 earthquake rattled the region, rocked buildings and homes. Students and office workers took cover under their desks.（一个6.5的地震震动了整个地区，大楼和住宅也严重摇晃，学生和办公人员躲在桌下找掩护。）※take cover 找掩护，作掩护
常听到的芮氏地震规模是Richter magnitude scale，「magn-」在拉丁的字根里有great（大）的意思，所以magnitude指的就是强度大小。了解「magn-」字根也可帮助我们学习其他重要英文单字，例如magnify (v)放大和magnificent (adj)壮观的、壮丽的。
地震会因为强度大小，而使用不同字词来表示，最常见的即是earthquake和quake，如果是较小的地震或余震，则可用tremor或aftershock。
Since Friday, more than 200 tremors have hit Alaska.（自星期五以来，阿拉斯加已发生超过200多个余震。）
如果地震强度很大或造成损害很多时，则可加入deadly致命的、massive、powerful、devastating、epic等来形容，如devastating quake；或是killer/monster quake。
震央英文是epicenter (n)，震央在海里而造成的海啸则叫做tsunami (n)，这个字的字源是日文，属于英文中的借字（外来语）。
Alaska quake causes severe damage, triggers tsunami warning.（阿拉斯加地震造成严重损害，引发海啸警报。）
※trigger (v)在这里是「引发，引起」或「促使」之意。除了动词外，trigger也可用作名词。The trigger for the walkout was the sudden closure of the manufacturing plant. （无预警的关厂是罢工的导火线。）
警报 warning/alert
虽然阿拉斯加发布了海啸警报，幸好未发生严重海啸，因此随后政府也宣布解除警报。在发生天然灾害时，政府或气象局都会发布警报，此时英文则可以issue a warning来表示，而警报除了warning外也可以用alert。
The Central Weather Bureau just issued a typhoon warning and people in low-lying areas were advised to evacuate before the storm hit.（中央气象局刚发布台风警报，并建议低洼地区民众在台风登陆前撤离。）
当危险降低后，随之会解除警报，此时解除警报则可用lift这个动词。
After the quake, government quickly lifted the tsunami warning for the coastal area.（地震过后，政府很快地解除对沿海地区所发出的海啸警报。）
损害 damage/ destruction
虽然这次地震造成严重损害，庆幸的是并未造成严重伤亡。如果发生民众伤亡，通常新闻会用以下的字词来表达：death toll (n)、fatality (n)死亡人数，casualty (n)伤亡人数。
Despite the severe damage of buildings and roads, fortunately, no fatalities have been reported. （尽管建筑物和道路严重受损，所幸目前并无传出死亡。）
损害除了damage之外，也可用destruction (n)和ruin (v，n)来表示「破坏，损坏」。
The tornado that touched down in our town last night left a path of destruction, collapsing houses, flipping cars and causing a massive power outage. （昨晚龙卷风触地造成一系列的损害，房屋倒塌、汽车翻覆和大停电。）
※collapse (v, n) 做「倾倒，倒塌」解释，可当作动词和名词。An old man collapsed on the street and was rushed to a hospital.（一个老人倒在街上被紧急送到医院。）
※flip (v, n) 为「翻覆，翻转」的意思。We flipped a coin to decide whether to stay home or go to the movies（我们丢硬币来决定待在家里还是出去看电影。）
※power outage 指的是「大停电」。The snowstorm knocked down power lines, and caused a massive power outage. （暴风雪压倒电线并造成大停电。）
庇护所 shelter
地震发生后，政府单位一定会建立庇护所来安置灾民，庇护所英文是shelter (n)，常用于animal shelter（动物收容所），homeless shelter（游民收容所）等。
The government set up emergency shelters for people whose homes were damaged during the quake.（政府为地震住家受损灾民设立紧急庇护所。）
